Eagles no longer homeless

In order to raise funds to revitalize the field at Northeast Academy for their use, the baseball team hosted a fundraiser game this summer.

In the past the baseball team practiced at the homemade batting cages behind the school and at various city parks.

“Having a field to practice on is exactly what we needed, we have the space to practice fielding and batting,” said senior catcher Evan Gutel.

In order to pay for the restoration and upkeep of the field, Coach Tres Savage and the rest of the Baseball team hosted the game on July 30 to raise money to build nicer dugouts and repair bleachers.

In addition to six current players and three alumni, many other people came out to support the baseball team in a friendly game.

The final score came down to 4-3.

Bruce Espinosa and Cole Chambers were on the winning squad.  The game came down to the wire, and without realizing it I had set myself up to pitch the bottom of the 5th with a 4-2 lead,” Savage said.

Savage hit alumnus James Williams with a pitch and he eventually scored.

“Ultimately I struck out the final batter with the tying run stranded at third.  It was very exciting, and I’m glad I didn’t blow the game for the guys on our team,” Savage said.

The team managed to raise over $1,000 from a combination of t-shirt sales and other donations.

Savage was thankful for the help he received and said the fundraiser was a huge success.

“This fundraiser game was a huge success, and I’d like to thank everyone who was involved. It was a ton of fun, and it really showed how people can rally together in support of a cause that benefits the community,” Savage said.  “To look into the future and see what this field means and will mean to people in our community is really important.  On our team, we understand that the world is about more than just us as individuals.  I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish with this field and as a team this season.”
