The track team has continued to be successful in their season.

The girls placed 2nd at a meet in Luther on April 4 and Athletic Director Mylo Miller was ecstatic with the result.

“The girls track team is just doing a fantastic job winning team titles in HCP history and we are thrilled,” Miller said.

There were some great performances from the girls in Luther, both in the relays and individual races.

In the relays, senior Aneesha Moore, sophomore Meiana Lovings, junior Alexis Ozment and sophomore Jysmone Johnson finished first in the 4X200m, and placed second in both the 4X100m and 4X400m.

In the individual races, senior Allegra Knight finished first in the 1600m and 3200m, and she also placed third in the 800m with a personal best. Moore placed second in the 200m dash and Johnson placed third in the 100m dash. In the pole vault, Ozment placed second with junior Claire Widmer right behind her placing third.

Senior Aneesha Moore was also very happy with how the girls raced in Luther.

“We had great communication and strategy throughout that meet, and we worked with it well and did better than we thought we would,” Moore said.

The boys also had some great performances in Luther. Junior Shaun Johnson finished first in the 200m dash and second in the 100m dash. Junior Daniel Heckman also placed well by finishing third in the two mile run.

The girls also had a meet in Ponca City on April 7 after Luther.

Moore was ecstatic with how the team performed in Ponca City.

“Ponca City has been the best meet of the season so far, and it gave us a light on what regionals would like,” Moore said.

The girls also had great performances in the relays and as individuals in Ponca City.

Moore, Lovings, Johnson and senior Relicia Morrison finished second in both the 4X100m and the 4X200m. Senior Stephanie Moreno, junior Katelynn McLaughlin, junior Abbie Poss, and Knight placed third in the 4X800m.

In the individual races Johnson placed first in the 100m dash and the 200m dash. Moore finished behind Johnson in the 200m dash and placed third. Morrison finished first in the 300m hurdles. Knight finished first in the two2 mile run. Pose placed second in the one mile run. Ozment finished third in the pole vault, and Moreno finished fourth in the 800m run.

The boys had a few standouts at the Ponca City meet.

Heckman finished first in the two mile run and second in the one mile run. Johnson placed third in the 100m dash and fourth in the 300m hurdles. Freshman Michael Shoats did well and placed third in the 200m dash.

The team’s next meet was in Kingfisher on April 11 and they had a difficult time due to challenging weather conditions.

“Ponca City was warm, the weather was amazing and then Kingfisher was wet and cold and I have never run a track meet in those conditions,” Moore said.

Despite the difficult conditions, Knight placed at the track meet by finishing second in the two mile run and third in the one mile run.

Even though the girls had a tough time, Moore is keeping an optimistic look on the season but knows that they can continue to improve.

“We need to work on team work in the relays, and we just need more dedication,” Moore said.

Junior Daniel Heckman is pleased with how the boys performed at the meet.

“We did all right and we handled the conditions well,” Heckman said. “There is a lot of talent on the team, especially with Shaun [Johnson], and we ran really strong.”

Heckman was the only boy to place at the meet with a finish of second in the two mile run.

“In my race, I was pushed by my other competitors in the 3200m and the 1600m, which gave me something to strive for,” Heckman said.

While the track team continues to improve Heckman says that the biggest thing that they can work on is attendance to practice and continuing to do cardio work.

The track team’s next meet is in Lindsay on April 25.
