Magnificent Marvelous Meaningful Mentorships

HCP’s seniors showcased their mentorship experiences at the annual showcase on April 24. Each senior put together a display showing various aspects their experiences. This year’s mentors included a police officer, a neurosurgeon and a state representative, among others.

Arely Bernal’s chosen career field was forensic science, so she did her mentorship at the Village Police Department. She logged her 28 required hours in one weekend, spending more than 10 hours in a squad car with her mentor.

“I stayed in the car for most of it, because they didn’t always know if the person they were arresting was armed or dangerous,” Bernal said. Despite the long days, she said, it was a positive experience.

Maddy Fresonke shadowed a neurosurgeon. She was able to observe surgeries, but due to HIPAA laws she could not share any specific information about that part of the experience. She did include a surgery schedule, with names changed, in her presentation. Fresonke will be attending Cornell University in hopes of obtaining a degree in biomedical engineering.

Zach James was mentored by with Rep. Jason Lowe at the state capitol.

“I got to see the House of Representatives in action, which was really cool. I definitely still want to go into politics.”

James was present at the capitol during the statewide teacher walkout, which he said he enjoyed because was able to see his mentor answer questions from his constituents. Jake Lange also completed his mentorship at the capitol, with Sen. Rob Standridge.

The seniors’ experiences were put on display at the showcase, which was attended by fellow students, parents, friends and mentors.
